That's not really news. Sony have said that the PS3 would be able to run Linux since E3. Not sure I really see the point though...

It's good to see from a hardware 'hackery' point of view, but if it's been designed to then there's no reason it shouldn't. Might be of use to someone that only has a PS3 perhaps, but I also don't see the point of having linux (or any OS) boot on a games console ..

I guess there's a point for homebrew applications equivalent to the 'XBOX Media Center'.

Perhaps, but it's a niche market, and to have to reboot to use it must be a pain, but I'm not that kind of hobbyist so my opinion isn't really worth much here

because you can get your homebrew linux code to work on a PS3!

Sod the GP32x, I'll write my homebrew on my PS3!!

I suppose it appeals to the nerd in me. Plug your USB keyboard in a surf the net with firefox, and all that.

I'm writing some homebrew for the 360 at the moment (well in fact I'm writing for the PC and will transfer it over if it's any good). XNA rocks

To be honest, the linux thing on the ps3 is only ever going to appeal to nerds. Average Joe user just won't be interested...

Agree with Iain, you can get a linux kit for the PS2 and its been around years but they havent shifted many because it doesnt really offer anything spectacular. The only thing I think putting linux on an xbox or ps2 does is perhaps give you a cheap machine that you can hook up to a keyboard and monitor and use as a basic PC.
