PC Upgrade Help Please
Another potential upgrader here after some advice.
My current XP2400+ system (done me proud) could do with an upgrade, but I'd like to reuse some of the bits where possible.
I'd like to keep:
My PSU, powerful enough (500W I think) and quiet.
My HDD's. All IDE, but I want to keep them for now and upgrade to SATA later.
My PCI cards. IDE raid card, TV Tuner etc. Need ideally 3 PCI slots.
Possibly keep my Radeon 9800Pro. I don't often play games on the PC, its used more as a media centre for music, video & graphics editing. Perhaps a cheap PCI-e card would make more sense ?
I don't really want to spend much more that £300 on the upgrade either, but don't mind AMD or Intel. I want 64-bit, dual core processing.
Could I get away with a new Mobo, CPU and RAM ? If so, any recommended combinations within my budget that will last me a while and have the sockets I need? I've been eyeing up the Althon 64 X2 3800+ (or 4200+) and the Intel Core 2 Duo E6300/E6400.

Dunno about prices these days but Intel are about to release a quad-core (I work for them ...). Go look here for one review: AnandTech: Intel's Core 2 Extreme QX6700: The Multi-core Era Begins
As you do video editing it may come in useful .....
But the C2D is an excellant choice and from what I've read you can overclock them very easily. Do a google on it - you should hit several articles that mention overclocking - to over 3GHz with no extra cooling and reliabiity.

don't touch AMD
core E6300, get a decent mobo with cooler and RAM and you can overclock these little beauties to 3.0ghz
look at the prices for the dual core at that price and compare it to what you did pay,
have done 4 of these systems so far and bargain of the century
jase

Thanks for the advice, I had read good things about the newer Intel chips. I think the quad core cpus will be a little out of my price range Any mobo recommendations considering my requirements ?
