Missing Gb?

Missing Gb?
Am I being stupid?
Just installed XP and a load of other stuff on a new laptop drive and am missing a load of Gbs.
It is a 100Gb drive that I partitioned into 20Gb for the system stuff (c and the remainder for data, etc (d.
If I right click on c: and look at the proprties it says 18.5 Gb is used.
If I left click on c: and then select everything on c: and look at the properties it says only 12Gb is used.
I selected to have all system and hidden folders and files visible and select them all when I looked at the proprties of C:.
What is using my missing Gb?
I thought it may be swap space of reserved space for cd/dvd burning etc. Am I right and is this normal?
How can I check what is using the 'missing' Gb?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

I understand what you are saying but I don't think that is the case in this situation.
Depending upon which method I use to look at the properties of a 20Gb partition, there is a 6.5 Gb difference reported in the used quantity of disk space.
Any ideas?

check for a hibernation file ! settings are in screen saver/power management settings if i remember correctly ! this can take huge amounts of space ! if you unhide all the system files etc, it will show as a hiber.fil i think. Just turn off hibernation and it will free that space up.
