Default implementing a postcode search database on your website

Haven't done one of these before and a project is coming up where it would be handy to have one.

In terms of aqquiring the database itself, do they cost much or is it possible to get one for free ? Just a big xref table full of lat and longitude isn't it ?

From the perspective of programming, is there any decent documentation kicking around ? Not bothered about the type of scripting language used - I'm happy to implement ASP, PHP, CFusion, etc...

We implement one at work, and it aint cheap. IIRC the rights to use it (with quaterly updates) comes in at just under £1000 per year per machine.

Check it out, its called "Postcode plus"

thinking about it, does a TomTom or Garmin satnav unit contain a useable UK postcode database I could "borrow" for development purposes ?

Hi there,

We use Quick Address Pro (QAS An Experian Company | Address Verification, Data Entry & Data Quality Software)

I hope you have deep pockets - these guys are expensive (aka "rip you off"). Wish we could move away from them!

But they do support many types of integration (ASP, Java, Perl, etc)

So long as the traffic wasn't too high, you could use a site such as streetmap.co.uk to work this out for you. Type in a postcode and check out the url you get redirected to

I've implemented a few sites using Address Management Web Service - address and postcode finder using Royal Mail postcodes in the past. Plenty of options and pricing plans with a nice little developer seciton including code samples. Still around after 5 years, which is a bonus

sounds good.

TopBanana, yeah there must be a few tricks you can pull to get this working ;-)

For now I just need it for developement purposes, so don't want to pay big bucks. The Royal Mail thing Judge Jules mentions sounds interesting with its developer section.

According to the links you guys gave, the database in zipped csv form is circa 600Mb.

Gonna have a look in my little Garmin SatNav and see what I can find!
