Default PDA to replace Pronto? and use as Tom-Tom

A friend is not using a PDA, said i can have it for my Pronto.

So i'm now thinking i can use it for many things.

1) Now i've got a phillips pronto (RU960), i just wandered if anyone has used their PDA as a remote? (I've seen the dongle & s/ware advertised)

My equipment is placed about 12ft away in a unit with glass doors. Plus i use the pronto for X10 and other lighting devices.

Could i replace the pronto with a PDA? It's colour too, compared to the pronto's greyscales and all my movies are in an excel s/sheet with IMDB links, so could be good, if it can actually control everything.

2) Is Tom-Tom on the PDA's any good?

I believe I did attempt to use one once before, but couldn't work it without thinking about it too much. So gave up.
If you would like a link to loads of PDA app's, let me know.
