if the bios supports it, our laptops HP/Compaq boot from USB stick. or you can set up a PXE boot server if you plan on doing it regularly, but I can only speak for HP/Compaq PCs/Laptops as I work for HP.

Trouble with booting a desktop-built drive in a laptop is that many of the drivers won't be in the bootable image (e.g. power management, PC Card, wireless, SATA versus IDE etc.) and it probably just won't work
You could do fancy things with SYSPREP, or as Wurzel suggests, use PXE (a network boot) - but first things first...
Why do you want to do it?

I basically want to get some info from the hard disk then I don't mind getting a new one or formatting.
see here, https://www.scoobynet.com/my-laptop-f-t533788.html
Is there any cables/software which will let me read the laptop disk?
Cheers

You can get "carriers" for laptop drives, which allow you to plug them into a USB2 port on another computer.
Thus you can access any (readable) data without having to boot the operating system on that drive.
This kind of thing look like what you need (seven quids) - hopefully someone else can confirm that it will work. It is for IDE, so choose a different model for SATA.
