Default Excel Bug?

Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Right, whenever I open a new excel document and try to write anything in a cell or click on any icon I cant because it is as if the curser is already selecting a series of cells.

I move the mouse, it changes the cells I have 'apparently' selected. I have tried everything I can thing of to unselect the cells and everything else inbetween but to no avail.

When I try to close excel via task manager I get the message 'can not close excel. When I try to close it a 2nd time it does so saying the program is not responding.

I have Windows XP and erm.... whatever the latest version of excel is...

This problem has been going on for weeks, but now I really need to use it

Any suggestions please

edited to add: just occured to me to try writing over an existing spreadsheet but same thing happens

I seen that before, but cannot remember how to fix it. It is like having EXT turned on but you cannot deselect anything..

Not sure, but I think a Office Service Pack sorted it?
