I've just got the kids a computer and want to know whether any additional software should be installed to reduce accidental browsing to sensitive sites and if so what people would recommend.

Net Nanny is excellent and you can set your own password to temporarily switch it off. It has tick boxes next to all internet topics and a customisable dictionary of blocked searchable keywords

I'd suggest to reconsider Net Nanny, it doesn't support Firefox or Opera, so kids can just bypass the protection. I've not tested this though - just found some discussion about it with Google. Look at Cyber Patrol.

Use good AV & anti Spyware software.

You don't give their ages, but children should always be using the computer in a family room - not in their bedrooms.

The kids are two and a half and 5 and Mum will be sitting with them whenever using it, there's no way I would allow any other method.

It's only got I.E and from first test, NN is not too bad, but I have come across a couple of issues.

Yep, I reckon supervision is the only way.

My three are very net savvy, I just need to keep the buggers away from the likes of Rotten and Steak and Cheese, there are some horrible sites out there, stuff you look at and come away feeling sick, curiosity gets the better of you. I think some of these sites could really screw a kid up.

No internet connected PC's in bedrooms until they are 18.

Would be interested in a method wherby sites could be unblocked specifically, i.e. Wikipedia and other stuff all blocked ?

In IE go to Tools|Options|Content you can set sites as allow or block.
