yep wireless link is the way to go. you will need a wireless router and a small wireless access point. if your xbox is chipped then i recommend the pimped version of xbox media centre. even with a 54Meg link you can stream dvd quality movies. all your music, movies, pictures etc can be streamed to your big tv down stairs. with the price of xboxs (£60 new, even cheaper if you buy one in eg cash converters) it is a cheap way of house hold media streaming in any room of the house.
i use one of these bridges.

Done it myself too-
Xbox media centre- 200gig hardrive on PC just for it- all my mp3s, films, games, etc
Love it, music (mental screensavers too), films (upscaling alright on 42"), games, pictures (slideshow your holiday snaps), peer to peer gaming, join my mate and I for some PGR2 action...
Well worth doing and cheap!
possibly only down side is the whire of the xbox drive- I attempted soundmatting in the cover but negligable difference-
So go to work - i dont know about the router though im still cabled round the house in the skirtingboard

I use flash FXP to send files to my xbox via cat5 to my router, router is standard wireless d-link with 4 port ethernet connections.
Pc connected to router via wireless connection.
Xbox connected to tv via three phono leads (standard av cable)
Then i either stream via smb network or transfer to xbox hard disk.
Streaming isnt so good as you cant f'forward or r'wind films.
Oh and pm me if you want any games!!!
