Can you run two instances of MSDE on one machine
Hi everyone,
Its apparently a simple question but I have had a day of grief from it already. Basically I have two applications (Track-It 7 and Sophos Enterprise Manager) that I want to run on one machine because to be honest neither would break more than 20% load even at peak.
However no matter how I install them, one seems to overwrite the other.
Anyone done it/got any advice?
Cheers
Stuart

look at the install options for MSDE (a readme file) you can specify an instance name when you install it so you can have multiple copies and when you use enterprise manager you see the DBs listed as
<machine name>
<machine name>\<instance name>
Gary
<machine name>
<machine name>\<instance name>

I believe that you can run upto 16 instances under MSDE (i asked one of our developers earlier this week!).
If you need confirmation, i can find the URL that says so (along with promoting MSes later and greatest equivalent of MSDE, whose name i forget).
