Question Laptop Sound prob

Notice tonight I'm getting a whining noise from anything I plug into the headphones jack. If I use a external speaker(usb connect) or just plain headphones the noise is still there.
When the laptop speakers are on as normal there is no whine. Just a pain as I prefer to play music through an external source as the lappy speakers are cr*p.
Any ideas anyone.

Tried that but no joy. I unplugged the ADSL in case that was it but it is definitely machine noise(whine) that changes as the fan etc cuts in, processor blips. Even when the volume on the laptop and the external speaker are at zero you can still hear it.
Any more ideas

Try updating the drivers or if you've updated them, try rolling them back?!
Have you done anything since the problem started?

I updated them tonight by driver update but the sound did'nt work at all after that so I had to revert to the original drivers.
Oh well - lappy speakers it is then.
Cheers anyway Criss.
