Question Free orange broadband and SMTP

Does anyone know if you have to use Orange SMTP servers to send out when using their free broadband service?

I can't see why you would have too but I have a client who cant send since switching.... Odd, we are not using any Orange pop or smtp servers at all, Im just wondering if they only allow port 25 to their servers or something daft.

Most ISPs will only allow connections from their own networks to their SMTP servers, security measure.

I think Steven's trying to tell you that the SMTP server you are using maybe only accepting connections from within its own network. Who's SMTP server are you using?

Turns out all outgoing SMTP mail DOES have to go through their servers....
I guess its to stop spammers setting up their mail servers using their free BB.

I agree with your statement 'most ISPs will only allow connections from their network to their SMTP servers' BUT I am surprised that this ISP will 'only allow SMTP connections TO THEIR mail servers'

Oh well, problem solved

kernel, I know what Steve was saying but I was using a local ISPs (who I used to work for and still have close ties) POP and SMTP mail servers, I have their authorisation usr/pwd etc but Orange would not let the traffic go there.....

Ok, sorry. glad it's sorted. Another reason to be very worried about jumping on the band wagon of cheap/free ISPs. I run a web forum and not being able to send email through its servers would mean it is as useful as the proverbial chocolate teapot (for sterving hot tea not eating cholocate )

Worth pointing out this is only the SMTP server for outgoing traffic - incoming traffic continues to use your normal SMTP host. I had same when moving to Dublin, Smart Telecom insist I use their SMTP for forwarding. I assume it's for legal purposes (so they can grab a copy, or at least track, every email passing out of their network). Pain in the *** for those used to testing/troubleshooting SMTP via telnet to tcp/25....
