WINS server on Win2k Server - how important ?
How important is it to run a WINS server on our Win2k Server ? From what I can gather its an alternative or something to run in addtion to our DNS server.
Can I get by without it ?
I've just looked in the event viewer and it says the WINS server has disabled itself ?
Whats the implications of not running with a WINS server on Win2k Server ?
The domain consists of a mix of 20 WinXP and Win2k computers.

If you have NO NTor win9x machine then you do not need WINS
I would leave it there as it requires no administration.
I will admit in new networks it has no place, but for legacy systems, existing networks I'd leave it alone, or just leave it disabled for a month rather than just binning it.

Edited to add we had around 9000 machines.

It's not just the operating systems, it's the network applications you have running on them that matter too.
Agree with David - leave it as there's no real administration ever needs unless the database goes and corrupts itself...

The event log says there's a problem with WINS service.
I noticed it wasn't running so tried starting it manually. Got this error:
Could not start WINS service on local computer
Error Number: 3758096386

Have you looked anywhere other than here for an answer? google etc ? I typed 3758096386 in to google and found 153 hits with the exact error you are receving.
Is it an automatic server, manual or disabled? When did you first notice it not running? Is everything else working fine?
