Default "SMART Failure.......

.......predicted on Primary Master: Maxter6y060L6". Now, being a complete techno-thicky I have no idea what this means, but I'm guesing it's not a positive message. It's coming up when I boot after the PC crashed last night. What do I do, if anything?

TIA

James

You can switch SMART off in the bios. Not every bios is the same, but when you first switch the PC on, try pressing the delete key or F1 key till the blue bios screen appears, then I think you need to select ADVANCES then scroll down to S.M.A.R.T. for hard disks and select 'disable'.

That should help.

...but isn't that indicating that there is a problem with the disk that SMART picked up on and if left unattended, may well lead to disk failure or data loss? By turning the bios option off, aren't you just ignoring the issue and asking for trouble?

James, this should hopefully help explain what it's all about.

Yes, probably not enough cooling or a boot sector failure imminent

Your hard drive is about to die. SMART is pretty good, and the only time I ever got that warning the drive died three days later.

Snap, same happened to me a few years ago. Very handy tool to warn you to get that data backed up or loose it forever.

A hard drive on one of the machines at work flagged up a SMART error, and I just disabled it in the BIOS. That was over a year ago now and the drive is still going.
