Default lost cd and dvd drive

Last night I tried burning a cd with nero, but It kept crashing when it loaded. I then thought I would use another package to burn my iso image and thats when I noticed that I didnt have any recorders available. I have both a cd rewriter and a dvd rewriter, both lg. This explains why nero kept crashing.

I opened up my system properties and there were the yellow explanation marks next to said hardware. Upon clicking properties on either of the 2 devices it gives me an error 41 with the message that "windows has loaded the driver for this device, however it cannot find the hardware".
This to me is a bit of an oximoron as if it has loaded the drivers then surely it must be able to see the hardware.

I have checked in bios and both drives are registered there. They are connected to a seperate ide channel ie one drive is on ide 1 with nothing else connected to it, and the other drive is on ide 2 again with nothing else connected.

I am at a total loss as to whats happened, I have checked for spyware/virusus and nothing has turned up. Both antivirus and spyware software is upto date. No other new software or hardware has been installed recently.

I tried different ide drivers for my mobo (msi k8n sli nforce 4) but no avail still the same problem. I am at a total loss. Even checked the windows update site but no new updates. I run XP home. Somebody please help, means I cant watch dvds in bed (not that type of dvd)

Ah - just a thought. You haven't slapped in any game software that employs that Starforce copy protection scheme have you?

There are a myriad of posts on the net about how the Starforce copy protect scheme actually does exactly what you're describing -- effectively killing your cd/dvd units in an attempt to "protect" the software for copying, etc.

Just a thought... ?

No, nothing new has been installed, the latest thing was updated software for my onboard sound Creative 24 which I got from the creative site. Even then they still worked after that for a few days, it was just when I got home yesterday that they stopped.

I have found another link from microsoft

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q314060

It could be that my copy of nero has auto updated to the latest version and that has caused a conflict. Think I will try the fix from the microsoft site to see if that fixes it.

Have you recently installed nero?

I had this problem when nero updated after I had installed sp2.

Nero has been installed forever. I did originally have version 6.x that I got with my dvd rewriter, but I upgraded to Nero 7 (well bought it from the nero website as I couldnt upgrade version 6.x to 7.x, but this again has been on since that first came out. The only thing I can think of is if it has autoupdated and this has changed something.

My nero 6 was fine until I installed sp2 and then I lost both my dvd drives at once, could see them in bios but could not find em for ****. Turned out to be a registry problem.I deleted the upper and lowere case filters and rebooted, scanned for new hardware and hey presto! have a look here

Please back up before trying to fiddle with anything in there.

I had this, was either down to easy CD creator/Roxio driver or possibly Itunes, it involved messing with the registry to get rid of it.
