Default Windows Vista

Hello

I'm having a 'Microsoft day' today, and have just upgraded one of my computers to Windows Vista Beta 2 to have a look. I have to say it looks very nice.

I have to agree, Vista with Office 2007 does look very shiney indeed

The only issue I have had so far is not being able to find a driver for my HP printer but thats a tiny issue

As a whole though the operating system is pretty damn resource hungry. I'm running on an AMD 64 3000 with 1GB ram and performance is ok but not as smooth as Windows XP was.

I'm running x64 and have been for months without one crash, lets hope Vista can do the same. They will need to fix iexplorer 7 first

I failed at setup with loads of errors, have had email admitting its a known issue

Might give it a go on a few other configs / machines when I have more time.

Hello

If you don't want to look at Bit Torrent, it can be downloaded from here: http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windowsvista/. It is a popular download and a bit slow at the moment.

That's the whole point of the beta releases, to check for bugs out in the field that aren't found in the labs. They get found, fixed etc. before the official release (when the real bugs get found )

Hello

Okay, having played with it for a day it still seems very good. Although to be a cynic another way to describe it is a slightly poor implementation of Mac OS X.

The 'Gadgets' that you can add down the side are useful, the translucent effects of the windows look nice and the whole thing feels easier to use.

So far the only thing that isn't really working is my sound card, as the drivers for them do not load (even the Creative Vista Beta Drivers).

There have now been some pretty smooth improvements to Vista by the looks of it. Today I upgraded from Beta2 (5384) to build 5472 and it's definately feeling like more of a finished product.

Performance was a bit suspect for me on Beta2 but seems to be running much smoother now.

As mentioned on another thread (by me) one day Vista just stopped working properly. Once it was booted it would take 10 minutes to do anything and then literally 20 seconds or so a click.

I did find when running beta2 on my Athlon 64 bit 3200 with 1gb ram there would be times when the most simple of operations would encourage a symphony of hard drive activity and not much else

You have any games running on it?!

I have a fx-55
2 7800gtx pci express boards

Wondering if counter strike and quake 4 work, I have all the 64-bit frivers but unsure as CSS and Q4 are made for XP

I have CS:Source running quite nicely - not as smooth as on XP I would say but certainly not bad

As long as it works, im sure my comp won't stuggle! Doesnt struggle at full resolution and settings with nero burning a CD in the background!

All I worry about is warping and lag spikes :-(

My 5472 activates fine from the Beta2 DVD-Kit key so would imagine it would be the same.

Yep the Beta2 kit contains both x86 and x64 as a lot of people now have 64 bit processors.

That'll be the 32-bit version

64 only runs on 64-bit processors
