Onboard nic problem maybe, need help
Guys,
Got a bit of a problem, and not sure on the cause.
I can connect to the net fine using an onboard realtek nic, but recently when I dload a file for a few mins or more, it timesout n my net and LAN is frozen out, and I can't connect to anything (this happens consistently). I'm using a netgear DG834G adsl router. To get the net AND lan back using the onboard nic, I have to reboot.
If I access the router/net wirelessly there is no problem at all, everything works fine.
So what do you reckon is the likely issue?
1. Router ethernet port? (actually it won't be that as I tried all 4 ports)
2. Bad Ethernet cable?
3. Onboard nic? (likely) or
4. Onboard nic ethernet port?
I have no viruses, or trojans etc
I tried reinstalling the nic drivers, disabling/enabling the LAN, no go.
The onboard nic is always lit up, but when the 'freeze' happens the orange light stays solid and doesn't flicker anymore. So I can read webpages, email idle online etc, the problem only happens when the connection is maxxed out or downloading for a few minutes, almost as if the nic is failing when the incoming transfer rate is higher?
Any ideas? I've never seen an onboard nic fail before, so I don't want to have to buy a PCI nic, if it's just the ethernet cable, thanks.

not the most helpful answer, but on the msfn forums realtek cards are slated, dodgy drivers and the like. Is it set to autonegotiate speed wise? id have to go with option 3 or 4 to be honest, could you grab another machine/patch cable, maybe get a mates laptop and use that under the same conditions? tried to force 100 meg full duplex on my router and it erm.....died. Router firmware up to date?

has your line recently been upgraded to MAX dsl by any chance? doubt that would cause this though. were any driver updates for the NIC pulled down by windows update? if its been working for ages then it defo seems odd, showing up ok in device manger? any error logs in event viewer? what about transferring files from computer to computer??? do you have more than one computer on your network, or could get someone to bring one around?

Had nothing but trouble with Realtek NICs where I used to work. Lockup's and speed issues.
Maybe worth getting hold of a PCI NIC (not a realtek), disable you're on-board and try that one to see if the symptons percist.

The plot thickens. After testing I do not have a problem dloading from http, ftp or torrents or any other net protocol apart from dcc in IRC. Well one particular regular source that I've always used on IRC. Other ppl who use the same source are not having the same issue though, which rules out the source having a problem if it was that.
Do you still think I have a nic issue?

Yep, NIC drivers are up to date, winupdate hasnt changed any of those.
Yep DMgr is fine.
No related error logs.
I'll try a LAN xfer test.
