I think there are some services that use the net ( ie broadband)
There is Skype, which runs from your pc, and is apparently a free service in some respects.

BT also ( as I found out yesterday) seem to run a service called BT Broadband Talk, that uses your broadband line as a phone as well. Weather this requires any pc involvement i didnt look into.

If your calls are to UK landline numbers and of limited number I can't see the point of these 5'er or 10'er a month things when places such as call18866 do a call for 4p that lasts for as long as you like. That's at least 125 calls you must make before these monthly deals start to save money.

call18185 do 0.5p a min calls to the USA via normal phones.
Out of interest do you have any tricks to make Skype calls more reliable? I gave up as 50% of calls I made were complete rubbish

I've got a decent headset, works well in TeamSpeak and other server based VOIP style systems. Works ok with my SIP freeware phone thing too but Skype was a disaster for me. I'll blame the people at the other end
