Default Wireless Laptop card problems, help please!!

Just got a U.S Robotics wireless 802.11g card for a laptop and its refusing to install properly. I have tried another card of a different brand and its exactly problem.

Ok the problem is that when you insert the card into the laptop is doesnt seem to recognise it correctly, Its a fresh install of XP Home Ed SP2 and the card works fine in a similar laptop with same OS etc. When I go into Device manager the card is listed under Network adaptors but its listed as '1394 net adaptor'. I have obviously tried the drivers that came with card but im fresh out of ideas so some help would be great.

Many Thanks

1394 Net Adaptor would be a Firewire card, not the Wireless NIC?

Your system thinks its a firewire device, and its adding the drivers for what it thinks it is ..( i think thats whats happening anyway)
Try this
In device manager, right click the "device" / select properties / go to the driver tab / select update driver, then point it in the location where your drivers for it are.
ie cd-rom.

just to add, if you "pull" the card out , the device disappears, yes ?

yeah i know this but everytime I insert the wireless card it comes up that i have inserted the 1394....., could it be that the onboard firewire is conflicting with the wireless card ?

I have tried updating the driver for the card this way with no luck, and yes if I remove the card the device disapears of the list

Have you tried uninstalling the card via Device manager? Then removing and re-inserting the card? Once re-installed tried using the CD-ROM drivers provided?

Okay. So have you forced a driver install at it? As Foot_Tapper has advised?
In other words not giving windows the option to install a 1394 driver. And thus hoping to change the identity of the card.

The only other thing I can think of ids to go to either:

A)... The manufacturer of the laptop to see if this is an issue. And maybe a BIOS firmware update will resolve it.

B)... Go to the manufacturer of the card to see if there are any updated drivers/advice..
