Question Installing OSx Tiger over a network

Mac Gurus.....

Updating from Panther to Tiger on my new (to me, anyway!) G3 PowerBook.
The DVD drive is on the way, but was thinking of using my Networked G4 to install Tiger onto the Powerbook.

Can it be done?

I'm sharing the DVD drive, but it wont let me go any further......

Any ideas?

Dan

Hi Dan,
You can't do it over the network as the machine needs to restart to boot from the install DVD

Do both machines have firewire? If so then put your G4 Powerbook into Firewire Target Disk mode (power it on and hold down T, not command T, just T). Connect the G3 to your G4 and then run the installer, it'll reboot your G4, and when the installer comes up you should see the G3's drives and be able to install to them.

you do it over a network you just need a net boot server as thats the way we image shop floor machines.
The easiest way though is as above

OK, pressed "T" on the target computer (the one I want to use to xfer the files to my Powerbook)

Quite happy - comes up with the Mac HD.....

But no access to the dvd drive.....

Stupid question, but how do I access the DVD drive?

So the G3's hard drive is sitting on the G4's desktop, correct? If so, simply insert the DVD drive into the G4, run the installer, reboot, and when the installer asks for a drive to install too, point it to the G3's HD which should be showing up in the installer.

presuming then that the G4 dvd drive can still be ejected using the Mac key board.... (G4 is a tower, not P/Book)

Will try without the DVD in the drive
