Having yet another spot of bother. Teething troubles if you like.....
Never easy is it
I have some software that I am trying to load onto my MMC card to use in my phone Sofar so good.
I open the DVD and the MMC card and copy the files across. three qtrs of the way through the copying process the following error appears
Error Copying File or Folder
Cannot copy cname: data error (Cyclic redundancy)
The file that seems to be causing the problem is a .dat file called cname, funnily enough
Any ideas as to how i can fix it?

Looks like it may be bad data on your DVD Try copying it to your hard drive rather than your memory card. I have a feeling that it'll throw up the same error. Could just call, but you gave this as an option
Could just be a dirty disk though so try cleaning it (correctly).
Failing that, try this (it's free for personal use).

Hello to you,
I got the DVD from a mate and SJ, even I don't need a manual to copy files from a DVD to a MMC
Anyway, i did as the readme file instructed and even tried some other wierd stuff all to no avail
IT WILL WORK!! (New day and all that) *Goes and picks up all the little pieces of Nokia & GPS Reciever*

So what exactly is a .dat file.
I'm assuming it's important as the ones that are causing me problems are relatively large compared to other files on the disc. Do they contain instructions for the programme to operate or are they full of graphics and sound instructions?
If I loaded the software without these files I'm guessing that it just wouldn't work........... but why?
If you liken the software to a car engine and the .dat file is the oil filler cap, if you take the filler cap off, the engine will still work or is the .dat file more of a piston and without it it won't work............ see what I did there
Just wondered!

It'll be some sort of data file. There is no 'standard' .dat file, but developers/companies will stick their application data in one sometimes that contains all the useful information for the program. They could be full of anything, it all depends what they decide to put in it.
Imagine trying to start your car without petrol in it. It won't work. Why? Because it's missing a key ingredient that is required for it to work properly. The same goes for some files with computer applications. Some you can get away with removing, others you can't. Some may manifest themselves early on, i.e. won't run at all, others may cause a problem at a later date when the information required is missing.
The .dat file you have corrupt is more than likely petrol, and not a hub cap or oil filler cap.
LOL I did my analogy before reading the rest of your post

Had the same on a backup I made of my PC files before formatting the machine. Saved all data I needed, formatted the machine, and when trying to read the DVD's, all fell over with Cyclic redundancy Checks. Got quite upset, as they had pics of Family members that arent with us any more and couldnt work out what to do, tried my DVD drive on PC at work, and couldnt read them either! Then tried on the server we have, and it read every single on! Whacked them onto a USB hard drive, and was right chuffed!
