Connecting to a Cisco 2501 router
Hi all, I just got back from doing my INTRO course for the Cisco CCNA. On the course they showed us how to configure routers and switches etc but we connected to a remote router via an IP address and I didnt actually physically see the router.
So Ive come into work today thinking we have a spare router sat doing nothing. Now I want to connect the router to my laptop and play around with it. Although because my course never covered this I have no idea where to start, any hints/tips would be good, need some guidance here, thought the course was pretty useless really for someone whos never had any introduction to stuff like this before.
I gather I use COM1 on my Laptop with a DB9 connector and a crossover cable going into the console port, is this correct? Ive gone through Hyperterminal and connected at the correct speeds and such but had no luck getting a response from the router. Anyone know what Im doing wrong?
Thanks

OK Im connected, managed to bodge a DB9 connector together with the correct pin outs, now all I need is the damn password to get into the system...
Anyone know how to do a password recovery on the routers? I cant even get to the router prompt let alone the enable mode.
