HP DL380 Help adding drives
Hello
I currently have 2 x 72gb drives (mirrored)
and want to add another 2 x 72gb drives.
i have whacked the drives in, they lit up for a bit and now what?
do i need to run the smartstart software or something?
also i've got a few jumpers here for scsi id settings, should i use them as well.
the drives came with no instructions.
cheers in advance
dazza

The drives you have mirrored are SCSI?
The Drives you want to connect up are also SCSI?
So what do you want to do with your new drives? I.e create another 2 disk mirror? Or Try and add them to your existing 2 Drive mirror?

You need to use the HP ACU util, you can either do this at boot (F9 IIRC) or through the HP utils, now web based, but should be on the start menu if the server was built with smart start, if not download the latest proliant support pack and install that.
You DO NOT need to mess around with jumpers, the drives should be jumperless..
HP ACU doesnt support extending logical disks but you can add the disks to an existing array as another logical disk, you could then stripe these in the OS, but I wouldnt recommend that.
when configuring drives, the drives your applying the changes to should flash orange, if your making changes to a 'controller' all drives attached will flash orange.

Dazza,
I'm assuming that the drives are the Universal Ultra320 SCSI 1" Hot pluggable drives that you are putting into the drive bays on the main server chassis?
As David says you should not need to mess about with any jumpers as they should be jumperless - the controller should set any required ID's.
Once the drives are in, use the Smart Start software at boot-up to configure up the new drives presumably RAID 1 (mirrored) as you already have an existing mirror.
I believe I'm correct in the following but DO NOT mirror up the new drives and then try and stripe (RAID 0) with the existing one as you could either (a) mess up the existing one and your server won't boot or (b) the server will still boot but you won't see the extra disk space that has been added cos the partition will not be correct.
Once you have the new mirror setup if you're running Windows then it should come up as a new Drive when you boot up.... you'll probably have to format the drive when the server is up and running.
HTH
Andy
If you have any q's then PM me or reply here during the day tomorrow as one of the guys I work with has just received a new HP server and he will be doing it during the day so I could check anything you need.

Or mail me as I used to support around 600 - 700 of these on a daily basis

should try playing with rebuild priorities (ignore it though as its not a rebuild, and one of the best things HP Smart Arrays do, is a pretty good online rebuild!)

Any good links to docs about Smart Array/DL disk management & management there of?
Hopefully getting in a DL385 with the blade enclosure I'm about to order, need to mirror up the disks.
Cheers, Alex
