is there an easy guide to getting started with this?
a sort of buy this, download that, etc , etc
i want a nice easy way to get a game on my pc i can play on the odd evening when bored......dont want to dedicate my life to it!

Pick the game up online at play.com or ebay for a reasonable price.
Once installed update the game through the ea online website and you will have loads of servers to choose from. You dont need to keep buying the expansion packs to get a lot of game for your money.

Yeah, just buy the original version and see how you get on, still the version we play the most.
As Fitz said, order BF2 from Amazon or the like, install it.
Then download the patch v1.22 using http://downloader.ea.com/ or via their official BF2 website (EA that is).
