Default Unix Experience

"Intermediate level of UNIX (to systems administration level)"

What sort of skills do you think i would need in UNIX to be of intermediate level?

I have worked with linux and am sufficient enough to play with users, etc.

What other skills would be involved with administering UNIX?

This for BT any help appreciated.

Do they mention platform ?

Sysadmin should / would include building servers , disc mirroring , user admin , networking , hardware diags , mail config , aspects of security etc etc

may also include stuff like backups , performance analysis and application troubleshooting .

.... just no documentation under any circumstances

Yep depends on the platform. I work as a UNIX Sys Admin, on the IBM AIX platform. As I am finding out there are differences between AIX, Solaris and HP (The big 3 UNIX platforms). For example in AIX, IBM have been forth right in there proprietry Logical Volume manager by allowing it to perform all-sorts of functionality, from creating small to large volume groups. Yet from what I have been told with SUN Solaris, there are different 3rd party products that are used to create logical volumes, one of them is veritas.

The main things for a sys admin (AIX) are:

Installing The AIX Operating System (New, Migration, Preservation)
Understanding the basic LED Codes on certain RS6000/P/E-server machines
Installing Maintenance Levels (And in some instances Microcodes)
Creating Volume Groups, Logical volumes and File systems.
Adding (And in version 5.3 decreasing) filesystem space
Adding/removing and modifying Users
Adding/Removing and Modifying Printers
Monitoring and fixing Performance issues
Performance tuning (Disks, RAM, the Kernel if need be)
Monitoring and fixing Networking issues
Identifying issues in Error Logs
Adding new hardware and configuring
mksysb backups and restores
And so on.....................

I hope that gives you some idea?

Cheers

Knowing that BT outsource some of it's IT to HP i would imagine it's HP UNIX.

I've sent my CV across as i meet the rest of the criteria and then some just missing unix, how vital that is i'm not sure. All i can do is sit back and see if anyone contacts me.

Cheers for your help guys.

no probs

BT's so monolithic it could be anything. I used to work on some Xilinx bladeservers we had in their exchanges monitoring SS7 traffic , and a previous company had a bt account where the kit was Sun....

Good luck anyway
