Post Apple 17" PowerBook 1.67Ghz used for a month, whats it worth ?

Hi all

I have a 17" Powerbook G4 1.67Ghz 100Gb which is surplus to requirements what do you think its worth and whats the most effective way to sell it ?

It was supplied from Apple direct in Sept 05 but used for around 1 month

Been boxed since then and totally standard and in brand new condition.

1.67GHz PowerPC G4 processor; 512K level 2 cache;
512MB of PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM;
100GB, 5400-rpm Hard Drive;
8x Slot-loading SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW);
17-inch TFT widescreen display; 1440 x 900 pixels;
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 128MB of DDR SDRAM;
Built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T (Gigabit);
Built-in 54-Mbps AirPort Extreme;
Built-in Bluetooth;
Built-in 56K V.92 modem;

Software: Mac OS X v10.4, Mail, iChat, Safari, Sherlock, Address Book, QuickTime, iLife (includes iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, GarageBand and iDVD(4)), iSync, iCal, DVD Player, Classic environment, Acrobat Reader, Art Directors Toolkit, FileMaker Pro Trial, GraphicConverter, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner, Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive, Zinio Reader, Xcode Developer Tools and Apple Hardware Test.

Oh and before anyone asks I am not deserting the cause but as I have another there is no point in denying this fine product to another

looking at ebay, prices range between £1100 to £1400.

ex vat new it's £1488, inc vat £1749

I have a feeling the powerbooks were updated slightly, as the current Apple Store page lists the resolution of the 17" at 1680 x 1050. Plus the standard HD is 120GB 5400RPM, with optional 100GB 7200RPM drive.

If it's kicking around not doing anything, I'd be inclined to hold onto it for a few months as when the G4 Powerbooks are EOL'd, which will happen this year (iMac G5's were EOL'd earlier this month) people who can't/won't go to the new Intel machines will be clamouring for G4 examples of machines, much as they did with the G5 iMacs.

There is a refurb one of almost identical spec for £1400 inc vat on Apples site.

I think I'm right in saying the 17"s never came with the HD screen (which is a bonus as loads of 15"s got sent back due to problems...) BUT you can't get 15" G4s anymore so these are probably (in a strange way) worth more...
Personally, the 17" is too big for my liking... the trackpad does not feel like it's in such a nice location as the 15" but that's just my opinion...

How come you're selling it so soon?
Have you ordered the MacBook Pro?

I know someone who is in the market for a 15" who might consider the 17" so PM me with a price guide but don't be surprised if I reply saying it's too much...
I'd consider it myself (if it were 15") but can't justify the expense right now

I sold my PowerBook 12" for £500 after using it for a coupla months. "You were robbed" I hear you cry. However, if you consider I only paid £600 for it as it was a cased display model, I didnt do too bad

Well as I mentioned I also have another PowerBook 17" with the HD screen TBH it does not bother me about the lines etc. . . . as I don't do much graphically work + I am very greedy with desktop space, the more the better - mail, 2 x Terminal sessions, Excel and Safari all open at the same time !!!!

It was intended to replace my wife's 12" PB but she simply did not like the size and weight so there you go . . . .

Personally I love my 17" PB as it packs a hell of a punch and yet is to my mind portable with great battery life too.

I think £1200 seems around the target price, and as Marcus suggested waiting until the G4 PB's are deleted will make it more desirable.

From what I have seen the MacPro will only be a worthwhile once Adobe brings out CS for the Intel.

Guys the PowerBooks ARE end of life. They were discountinued about 4 weeks ago !

We still have a strong demand for them at MacWarehouse as much of the sw it not optomised yet. Performance difference won't be much though unlike the G5s vs the Intel machines where applications like Filemaker run at about 6th of the speed on the Intel based machines.

Didn't know that Allan. Assumed they were theoretically EOL'd when the first intel machines were released. If it's anything like the iMac G5, then the stock will be depleted in a month or two I'd have thought, hmm, perfect timing for a June release of new iBooks/MacBooks and/or MacBook Pro's, and possibly even the Mac Pro Desktops.

We've had the last iMac shipment and got less than 100 lefty whihc will be gone within the next two weeks.

Only a small number of powerbooks left now.

Apple have a habit or EOLing things very quietly to ensure the stocks get sold.

Oddly enough the eMacs are still current !
