For burning DVDs. Then anything made by Pioneer or NEC should do the trick. Be aware that newer drives also allow you to burn labels on your blank DVDs, which is called lightscribe. But you need to buy the special blank DVD discs to use it.

Have heard isues with Nero 7. I currently use Nero 6 myself.

Depends what you want to burn?

If films. Then most players support DVD-R. But I find now-a-days that it depends on how much each standard is to buy.

Get a pack of both and see what works for you.

The actual disc itself is now more important than whether it's + or -.

However, for better compatability, I would still suggest you use -R. Get discs with a dark purple coating. These are the most compatible.

You will normally find Ritek, Datawrite etc have the best coatings. Ideally you want CMC Magnetics or Ritek G05 dye based discs.

Take a look here for discs.

Oh and if you intend to 'back up' your film collection, then you will need a program such as DVDShrink, or something similar.

Thats true. At the moment I find SAMSUNG DVD+R discs don't leave me with coasters. But it's horses for courses when it comes to which brand you buy. But as D16GER as mentioned anything with a RITEK dye is best.
