Default Online gaming help

not with playing of course, just getting connected.

I have blast on Battlefield 2 now and again. The trouble is ...

I have to use a modem to connect as if I use the router I have it fails to make a connection with the server, switch over to the modem and no such problem. All other applications, such as Ie work with the router, just not the game I want to play.

Any idea's?

Yeah, your router is not configured to allow the port the game runs on to gain access to your PC.

Find out what port the game uses, then go into your router config and allow it access.

Thanks, but that makes no sense to me! Damn new technology you'd think they design it so it works!

Ok just ticked everything in the games section on the router and access is now granted, makes you wonde why they don't set everything to allow in the first place, especially as you don't even get a manual these days!

Is your router not set up to be controlled by the OS?

Yeah, but it's done for a reason - the more open ports, the more open to attack you are. Thus someone who will not play games will not want these ports open.

TBH it should be up to the game maker to supply info as to what ports are required, not the router maker.

But, glad you got sorted

Oh and as for the OS control - you should have an option like 'upnp' in the router setup. Enable that.

when I get 5 mins I'll switching them off 1 by 1 and see which one actually allows the access. I couldn't see any of the above ports. They all had a description like, POP3, HTTP FTP etc. so once I know ...

I was in the upnp control and only windows was ticked, that's where I ticked all the others.
