Upgrading memory
It's time to upgrade my system memory, I currently have one 512MB ddr PC3200 (400Mhz) but would like two 1Gb sticks, my motherboard is an ASUS P4S800, I've done some research into this but no one seems to recommend 2Gb
This is from the Dell website :
System Memory Configuration: Standard Memory: N/A Maximum Memory: 3GB using 266MHz DDR modules
2GB using 333MHz DDR modules Expansion: 3 Socket(s) ( bank(s) of ) Host Type: Motherboards Class: MotherBoards Central Processor: Bus Architecture: AGP/PCI Native O/S: (N/A)
This is from the Crucial website:
System Specs184-pin DIMM Banking3 (3 banks of 1)ChipsetSiS 648FXDDR SDRAM FrequenciesPC2100, PC2700, and PC3200 Error Detection SupportNon-ECC onlyGraphics SupportAGP 8XMax Unbuffered DDR SDRAM3072MBModule Types SupportedUnbuffered onlySupported DRAM TypesDDR SDRAM onlyUSB Support2.x Compliant
and
Your MemoryYour computer currently has 512 MB of memory installed; and will support up to 3072MB.
Slot 1 512 MB Non-parity DDR PC3200Slot 2 Upgrade this slot Slot 3 Upgrade this slot You have 2 empty memory slot(s) out of 3 total memory slots.
I would like one of these
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS3 (GE2GB3200BDC) (MY-046-GL)
GeIL Value offers outstanding performance levels at a very low price point, is compatible with all systems and backed up by a lifetime warranty. GeIL Value also has good overclocking ability.
- 184pin, Non-ECC, Un-buffered, high performance DDR memory modules
- GeIL 5ns 32x8 Density DDR Chip
- 6 Layers Ultra Low Noises Shielded PCB
- Optimized SPD for Dual Channel DDR motherboards
- Blue Aluminum Heat Spreader
- CAS 3.0 8-4-4 @ DDR400 PC3200
- 2.55V-2.95V
- Lifetime return to manufacturer warranty
or one of these from crucial

Have you had a look at the ASUS website? They will be able to give you a list of compatible RAM for that Model of Motherboard. And if you need a BIOS update as well.

I presume you used the Crucial Memory Advisor plugin that scans your system and recommends only RAM thats guaranteed to work with your mobo. If you want the top spec stuff then I think Crucial have a range called Ballistix which is the high-end memory.
I might be wrong but I dont think it matters if you go with higher clocked RAM, even if your mobo wont support it, it runs at the highest available speed. The main problem is youre paying for something you dont need.
