Default import option for iTunes these days is AAC, which is mpeg4/m4a. It's possible the files you originally imported were MP3's and you've ripped a cd and it's using AAC instead of MP3.

Import encoding options can be found in the advanced settings.

As for changing existing files from AAC to MP3, you'd need to reconvert them, as it's not just as simple as changing the file type, and if you reconvert them you could lose sound quality.

Is there a specific reason you need to change them from AAC to MP3?

cheers for the reply. i downloaded itunes off the net and use it for making my own compilation cd's to listen to in the car.

now i've got a cheap mp3 player and it doesn't like mpeg4. it will play them but it will only regonise one album / folder not matter how many seperate albums i put on there.

OK, in which case converting them is probably what you'll need to do. There are probably a fair few conversion utils out there, but what you could do is simply burn the songs to an MP3 disk, which will convert them, then copy the files back onto the machine directly from the CD.
