Default Couple of XP issues

For some reason when I'm assigning a program to use when opening a filetype and I select 'always use this program', the icon stays a standard windows picture.

Also, I have a program shortcut in my 'Programs' that does not show the correct icon, but the options to change the app and icon are greyed out. The only way to fix it is to create a new shortcut.

Ideas anyone.

Thanks

The only way I have sorted this out in the past is to download a program called 'Powertoys'. It's a free download from micrsoft. One of the options is to fix corrupted Icons and associations.
