IP address'. everyone different?
I thought IP address' were al different.
I checked my sisters IP address on my web site salsachatta.com as i'm wedmaster.
It gave me here username and IP address.. and also other using that same IP address... which was when i log on.. as my usrname.
thing is it gave the name of another user who has the IP address the same as my sisters... I know where he lives and its about 2miles away from her house.
how can this be when i though all were different, Her IP address is a NTL one and this other users is NTL too.
But i know 110% he's not used her PC! lol
is this comman?

Phil,
I'd say it's because the users don't have static IP addresses, which is quite normal. Basically there's a pool of addresses that are used. When your modem connects (regardless of whether it's dial-up/ISDN/ADSL/whatever) it will ask the server for an address. The server will grab one from the pool and assign it to you.
If you're lucky, you might get the same one as last time, if not, it'll be different.
My guess is that all is happening is that the users happen to get the same address but at different times.
If they are all connected at the same time with that address then I'd say it's not the real IP address being used by the machine, but maybe an annonymous address.

ALL IP addresses are different none will be the same.
The DHCP usually 'loans' out IP addresses for so many days and if u dont log on again in that time it passes it on to someone else, so sometimes u might keep the same address (depends how the DHCP is setup) but the chances of getting the same ip address as someone u know has just had are VERY VERY unlikely, there must be a mistake somewhere.

I look at the IP address.. as as a wedmaster you'll know you can ban ppl.
You click the username then it gives you the option of viewing the IP address.
then the window opens and list the other pl who have used that IP address.. which would be correct... as i'd used the same PC for two other user names.
then there was the bit that said other usernames useing the same IP address!!?
I'll check again... but when you view the full IP address it looked the same... with the NTL mention amung it.

If they're using the same ISP, and it's giving dynamic, rather than static IP addresses (as is more prevalent), they can both have had the same IP address *AT DIFFERENT TIMES*. A single IP address must map to a single physical NIC (network interface), at any given time - hope that helps!

"NTL - could be a transparent proxy..." & "NTL usually shows up as the ntl proxy server ip,...". Wot they said To confirm, run 'ipconfig' from Sisters machine while you're logging. NTL will be running a private network internally for it's users.
