Default upgrade path?

I currrently have a 3 year old P4 1.7, running with a couple of EIDE drives, and a geforece ti4200 g/c.

looking to buy/build a new pc - can i get a noticeable performance leap spending £250? what chip spec is faster, and is SATA that much faster?

self building, and second hand parts are OK with me. Maybe something that was good last year?

You maybe able to upgrade the components in the PC you have now.
The CPU maybe upgradeable to a 3.06Ghz Hyperthreading CPU (The old 533 FSB one). If you hunt around may get one for £50. You need to look at what Motherboard you have and research it's upgrade path.

Just a suggestion.

Forget about changing your hard disks. SATA is not that much faster, unless you get a Raptor.

As above, what are your current system specs (exact mobo etc) as you may be able to upgrade the CPU quite a bit.

Then add a bit of ram and a £100 GFX card and you should be going well.

Graphics upgrade will probably only be worth it if you want to play games; you don't list what you use your PC for.

motherboard is a via p4xb

this can take a p4 socket 478 400mhz,
3 x dimm pc1600/2100 ddr 266
4 x agp slot

looking on ebay, there seems an upgrade to 2.8 is possible, keeping the 400 bus speed. would a 3.2Ghz 800 fsb chip install work at 400 and be faster than a 2.8 400?

Nice info on sata - probably a fresh install of the o/s is called for then.

graphics card - i hardly play games at all, but I am currently playing NFS most wanted - this runs not too bad considering but with occasional slow down. certainly may be worth a new graphics card for £50 - £100 second hand for a good card. Suggestions? I find it hard to work my way through Toms hardware league tables on this.
