Default Samsung TFT monitors - difference with 4/8ms and DVi/VGA???

I'm doing some IT upgrades at the minute, and one of the requirements is a new TFT panel, as my 19" Iiyama CRT is a little large now.

Narrowed it down to these 2:

Samsung SM913N - http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=83914

Samsung SM930BF - http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...uct_uid=100479

The first one is circa £185, second one is £243. The only difference in spec is 8ms and VGA for the 913 and 4ms and DVI/VGA for the second.

So, is the 4ms and DVI really worth an extra £60? Will be manily used for work, design, graphics etc plus browsing.

How good are VGA-DVI adapters?

Cant get to those link as at work just now but..

DVI is a better conection, can handle more data, but at those rezelutions (i guess it 1024?) its not gona matter DVI or VGA. Personal i think dvi gives a sharper pic, but i dont think my views are backed up atall be any studys.

as for the 4/8ms they not much to go by as all screen co's lie to u. but anything under 12ms i doubt ull notice the diff unless ur really into your fast games.

So in conclution, dvi i personal think would be better, but you wont notice a diff between that and the agp.

hth's

EDIT: The agp/dvi connectors work fine. Iv got 2 screens running just now, 1 dvi 1agp (my gfx card only has dvi) and it works just fine

the_crow, have you any idea what you're on about? it doesn't look like it.

DVI is a digital interface, VGA is analogue. the visible benefits are a crispness in small fonts and minutae that are more expensive to reproduce with VGA systems.

like all systems, they are as qualitative as their slowest/worst component.
you're going to have vga quality if there is any analogue component in there.

DVI card, cable and TFT and you're sorted.

sub 10ms response time is pretty cool anyway

"DVI is a better conection, can handle more data"
I don't think data throughput is the issue with a DVI/VGA comparison

"but at those rezelutions (i guess it 1024?) its not gona matter DVI or VGA"
the links work for me, but at 19", I'd have guessed at 1280x1024, but even at 1024x768, a crisp picture is the holy grail - i work at a monitor 9 hours a day, so any chromatic aberration or fuzziness on the screen is really noticable and annoying to me.

"Personal i think dvi gives a sharper pic, but i dont think my views are backed up atall be any studys. "
i would think there is a study or two to warrant the development of a new digital standard for monitor connectivity.

"as for the 4/8ms they not much to go by as all screen co's lie to u. "
I am genuinely interested to hear about this - if the refresh rate is not as advertised, won't they get sued?
Ad: "Wow! 4ms response time!"
Consumer: "err, it's 12 actually. here's a lawsuit."
Ad: "Okay, here's a free monitor, shut up will you"
Ad: "Wow! 12ms response time!"

"but anything under 12ms i doubt ull notice the diff unless ur really into your fast games. "

Went for the second Samsung monitor in the end at £243, but its now waiting to be sent back - pile of cack compared to my current Iiyama 19" CRT.

The screen is way too bright, even on the bottom setting, and worst of all the screen is much darker at the top than the bottom - not very good considering I will be doing graphic work on it 8-10 hrs a day

So, i'm back on the hunt now, may try a Viewsonic.

Okay. My go:

DVI = Digital Video Interface (The best way to view on a flat panel screen, bit like High Definition TV is now)

VGA = Video Graphics Array/Adapter (The old anolgue way of producing a screen, i.e like the old way of showing TV)

It depends if you have a Graphics card that has a DVI output whether you will get to use DVI. In my opinion DVI is the way to go, as the picture is much sharper especially at the higher resolutions, in ohter words 1280x1024. Also not all monitors suply a DVI cable with their Flat panel monitors, and to buy buy one can be around £20.

8/4 ms = Speed the refresh of the screen can take place. ms = milli seconds. the lower the number the better the refresh is. As pointed out before, this is useful if playing games like first person shooters.

In selecting a new flat panel monitor may I suggest looking here first:

The Iiyama CRT monitors are very good, so you'll need one of the best quality LCD monitors to replace it. My old CRT was Iiyama too. I replaced mine with an Eizo 19" L778 - Superb quality. If the price is too steep for you, go for the Eizo 19" L768.

If you live anywhere near Somerset - come & see mine! (Ohherr misses).
