Unhappy How do I kill an app?

I have a problem with an app which won't die. It crashes (Not Responding), but I can't quit the application using the task man. Unfortunately when it does crash, it locks a file, which means another app can't function properly and I have to restart the machine.

Is there something with a bit more bite than task man which will kill it sucessfully?

1) What app?

2) Are you using Task Mangler to kill the application, or the process that runs it? Some apps will need the process killing as well as/instead of the app.

3) If the app is that flakey, why are you using it?

It's a GNU Debgger, which shows C source.
Two tasks are listed in the applications window of taskman, both not responding. One process is shown in the process list, gdb.exe. When it stops responding I can't find gdb.exe on my machine except in the prefetch (not sure when that implies).
Answer to 3): I need to use it, it used to work (a few months ago) but I've recently tried to use it again and it just stops responding. I have uninstalled and re-installed the lot, but no luck.

I take it that your using Windows XP? If so if you go into Windows Task Manager and select view and select columns. Then tick the PID box. When your app runs you then be able to trace which child processes are attached to that program. Kill the child processes first before the parent and you should not have your issue anymore.

If you go to Task Manager and right-click the non responding process (not the actual app, but the process) then select 'end process tree'.

This will end the program and everything it has in it's grasp at the time.
