Hard Disk access is slow
This has been happening for about 3 months now, booting to XP login screen is fine, but logging in and application starting is very slow. It's not disk space availability, ran a full spyware sweep (Spysweeper), defragged, edited the system startup applications (MSconfig).
Anyone know of a good utility to do a performance check on my PC, I've done a search, but there's so many freebies, it's always a little risky in which one to choose.
Thanks,
Mark

S.A.N.D.R.A is just about the best around. There are also others like Everest Home but it isn't as comprehensive.

Worthwhile checking your virus protection settings, might be that every file is being scanned on access which could slow things down.
Did the slowdown occur after any particular software install?
Also check out Task Manager and make a list of anything that is using allot of resource.
Hope this helps.

SANDRA seemed to help in identify a few things.
By the way, I'd already done scandisk/defrag, hadn't changed any AV settings and hadn't updated any drivers etc. What I did decide to do was uninstall Spysweeper 4.0 and NOD32 and reinstall them, seems to have helped abit, as one thing I did recall was when I upgraded to Spysweeper 4.5, it caused a few issues.
Login is a bit better, but after that, things have improved, but thankyou for everyone.
