PCI seriall I/O cards and MS-DOS (!)
We have an old legacy application running on MS-DOS which accesses COM1 and COM2 through the traditional IRQ and I/O addresses.
The computer it was running on needs to be binned.
The new computer has a COM1 but no COM2. I've found a PCI card that, once installed, will play the role of COM2
My question is, will this card offer itself to MS-DOS as a COM port ? (or does it need a Windows OS to function)

I take it you don't have a com 2 header on your motherboard which you can plug in a comm cable into? If so then it just needs activating in your BIOS and DOS will see this as a default. Com port settings should be set-up as:
3f8 IRQ 4 (Com1)
2f8 IRQ 3 (Com 2)

no headers on the motherboard or else things would be much easier!
I'll check when I buy the PCI card to see if its DOS compatible. I thought maybe's the BIOS might pick up the PCI card as the new com2, and subsequently DOS would see it.
If not, I'll install the PCI card into Win9x, then run the DOS app through windows.

Give it a go.

jpor, so going back to the DOS question.
Once instaleld , won't PCI card simply act as if it was a COM2.
eg. won't it just steel IRQ3 and $2F8 and effectively be COM2 ?
