Maximum length of cat5 before signal fades ?
We need to connect a computer in the factory with the main switch in the office - its about a 100m run of cable. Is it possible to do this without the signal fading or, will I need a repeater / switch in there to refresh the data ?

100m is the certified max for Cat5. I've seen runs a little over this and still work.
In a factory, you run the risk of interference from heavy electrical equipment so you my not get away with such a single long run.
You're just retransmitting the signal by adding another switch, so that would be the easiest solution. You'd just need a mains power point somewhere along the run to power a seperate switch. A cheap one would do the job for just 1 PC.

cat 5 is quoted at 100m before possible signal loss.
I've seen longer lenght with trouble but also seen much shorter lenghts causing problem (admitely in nosey enviroments).
Try it and see if it works but budget for a repeater / switch just in case

Don't forget that that the 100M max includes for up to 10M of patch leads and that the main run maximum is specified at 90M
