Without an hardware MPEG2 encoder itll look ****e Im afraid. Id suggest an Hauppauge PVR150 which can be bought for about £50 direct. This has the required feature so you can capture the analogue video and compress it in real-time. The isnt a lower cost solution unfortunatey. Bundled 'MyDVD' will enable you to author a DVD ISO image which Nero or EasyDVD Creator will write to DVD.

I am being trusted with his camera for a week, so I can download the footage myself
I'll make sure Baz see's this as he'll need to know for future downloads

A couple of things I think are a must are;
-MinDV tape (most universal)
-Stability control (image is smoothed out when going over bumps etc)
-FireWire connection (faster than USB, but not all computers have this connection. Speak to lewi or Johnuk1).
Best thing to do is read some reviews on cameras in your price range
