Lightbulb 5.1 system for computer games

Just got a new PC and it runs Battlefield 2 on max everything like a charm. Amazing the competive advantage high-res gives you in these games. Anyway, it'd be really useful to hear from where the bullets are coming - so I was thinking of a surround system. The motherboard supports up to 7.1 but I think that might be overkill?

Any suggestions?

yeah - don't run the onboard sound chip

Seriously get a Creative card - the processing is offloaded to the sound card so the impact on the CPU is lessened.

The audigy 2 zs is probably the best to go for at the moment: http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=302657&cks=SPK £40 for one.

Also - 7.1 isn't overkill, you REALLY get a sense of direction when using them!

However, lots of articles I've read lately have stated that a good set of headphones blow speakers out of the water, and to be honest I have to agree... it's worth considering.

Not much tbh. You can get a better sense of the surround, but you need to have the speakers positioned correctly.

p.s. you can get 5.1 surround headphones now. Not tried them myself yet, but the idea sounds promising
