Default Non Microsoft E-mail server

I'm looking for a windows based cheap (read near to free) e-mail server which works similar to exchange - data stored & managed on server.

Don't really need any fancy stull like diary's or "task list" - but shared folders would be handy.

Any recommendations?

I normally deal with exchange but I have used this on a few occasions

if you look hard enough online you may even find a temp serial number for trial purposes of course!

I've used Merak to provide e-mail services on a shared server in Telehouse for years and it's generally very good. It also has an Outlook plug-in for sharing calendars etc.
