you may find cheaper, but have a look at some here

these are for ADSL, for cable you need a broadband router

Pretty much. The only issues I had was understanding how the connection worked on the Router to connect to the internet. The only other issue you may come across is the WEP encryption and the MAC addressing. Once up and running your laughing.

I set one up succesfully and if I can do it, anyone can

I used a D-Link DSL-G604T ADSL router which needs a reboot every now and then but seems fine most of the time. My prior knowledge of wireless networks was nil and still is but it all works fine so I'm happy with that

and how many people have set their wireless network up out of the box and NOT encrypted it? Nor set up the restricted access list?

I'm astonished at how many insecure networks are broadcasting their availibility just within range of my house...

While they are REALLY convenient, I fully recommend getting someone to secure it properly for you or learning how to yourself.

Very easy, all you really need to do is first of all setup your wireless card on your pc (install drivers etc) then normally you connect to your router using internet explorer. My routers address was http://192.168.0.1 by default but I'm sure your instructions will tell you. Enter the username and password supplied by the router manufacturer (mine was admin, password the same) and then bingo you are connected to your router.
All you have to do now is enter your ISP credentials and test the connection. There is a lot more you can do with the router such as port blocking, e-mailing logs, creating VPN's etc but just to get you on the net is pretty straight forward.
Most of the newer routers have a setup wizard which actually do work.

Not me, mine is fully encrypted. That was a bit of a nightmare setting that up but I got there in the end. I've found a few unencrypted networks too but not used any, yet

Mine is secured by only allowing certain mac addresses to connect, any other machines who try and connect will be told to bugger off.
So no, I don't have WEP enabled.

My advice is to buy a bundle from http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk
If you can't see any bundles buy a Netgear 54mbps wirleless router such as a Netgear DG834 v2 ADSL2/2+ Router, then buy a Netgear PCI Card for your computer.

I've already got a Netgear ADSL router / modem. To get wireless should I buy an wirelss access point of some sort and plug it into the router or is it better just to replace it with one that copes with wireless and wired connections? Sorry to hijack!

http://www.telephonesonline.co.uk/_modems_routers.asp

This might be worth a look - I bought my BT2100 wireless modem/router from them - far cheaper than BT.

I used the BT 1010 USB wireless adaptors for my PC's - one of which I bought on e-bay - off the top of my head I can't remember where I bought the other one from.
