Backing up files to DVD - how?
I'm attempting to copy some .avi video files to a DVD so I can free up some hard disc space but Windows will not let me.
I've tried to drag & drop, copy & paste but it just gives an unrecogised file error.
I've tried to install Nero but that will only create an image file which it insists on saving to the HD instead of burning to the DVD, taking up twice as much room
Is there a simple way to transfer my files to DVD?

nero should do it provided you select to make a data dvd and add the files using the wizzard, before the burn starts you need to change the option of the "destination drive" and point it to the dvd-burner and not the hard drive, it is probably showing image drive as the destination?
IIRC the destination drive is an option on the last page of the menus just before you click burn

Sounds like xp isn't recognising your dvd writer as a writer (otherwise Nero would let you burn straight to the disc). Have you got the right drivers loaed etc? What make / model is the writer?

On the later versions of Nero you can change the default 'Recorder' from your physical writer to an image burner, so that could be your problem.
When Nero starts, close any dialog's that open and on the main menu select the 'Recorder\Choose Recorder' option (Ctrl+R). When the window opens it should show two devices, your DVD Burner and an Image Recorder. If it does, select you DVD Burner and click OK, you should now be able to write your DVDs. If you can only see the Image Burner, then it looks like Windows hasn't detected your burner correctly.
