use a program called Hopster which lets you get around the firewall that blocks it Just watch out for any spyware that might come along too though!

Are you thinking of Trillian? If so, that has to be downloaded too.

Perhaps this is the reason they've decided to block it? I know you feel like it is infringing on your rights to 'chat', but messenger type programs are one the biggest security problems for network managers.

If you want to use a chat program, you can get some that are internally controlled and can be filtered so that dodgy downloads and spyware can be stopped.

I don't use it because of the spyware that suddenly appeared and because of the amount of work I do actually have to do, I simply don't have time to sit and talk to people on msn etc!

Hello

In order to use Yahoo messenger, I use http://www.logmein.com to connect to my computer at home and I run it there. It works, and with encryption the nasty network people can't see what you are doing (easily, anyway!).

Don't have to see the content to block it. Personally, if i saw unknown encrypted traffic on my network it would be blocked

Hello

Well, luckily I don't think you are my systems administrators....

I spent a while arguing with them to get Yahoo access but I lost unfortunately. I even thought about demanding it, but couldn't be bothered in the end.

What is the business purpose of MSN, Yahoo and AOL messenger?

Sites I found (and blocked) are:

http://webmessenger.msn.com
http://www.e-messenger.net
http://www.wbmsn.net
http://piglet.0900provider.nl
http://www.msn2go.com
http://www.msnger.com

I can't comment on their functionality, but these were the most popular ones from a Google search.

Access to this web page is restricted at this time.

Reason:
The Websense category "Proxy Avoidance" is filtered.

Hello

Okay ... how about remote desktop? Some companies will block all external traffic, but it is worth a go. I have changed by remote desktop port to 22, which is left open at lots of companies.

Andy: I use it to quickly communicate with the people who I work with across the globe (MSN), so it does have a business use.

Steve,

That's fair enough, but we have an issue with people using it to chat with their friends and organising their social lives!

I've been told by their team leaders that since I've blocked it, they are more productive.

This will usually work, however home isp upload speeds are usually slow, i.e 256kbit (30KB/s) so its just too slow n unuseable. Well for me it is anyway.
