Default XP SP2 firewall problem

as above, all is installed. Since SP2 its been blocking FTP uploads, ive allowed the software i use in the exceptance list of the firewall, ive even stopped the firewall service. It still wont let me FTP as i used to before.

Any ideas, is it a reg fix ? ive checked local security policies, cant find anything in there though.

TIA

the firewall on sp2 doesn't block outgoing traffic and youve turned that off as well id say its sp2 itself, have you tried reinstalling the program? could try adding TCP/IP port 21 which is the ftp protocol, but that would be incoming ftp, as i said if it still wont work with no firewall id look at the package itself

also i wouldnt stay online for long with no firewall

i added the port 21 aswell, still no joy, ive uninstalled sp2, still not fecking working, i know its something to do with sp2, as it was fine before that.

it was an upgrade from W2k, i couldnt wipe it before due some space issues, i can now, so it will get a nice fresh build over the weekend and i will go from there

wireless router has firewall so safe anyway. and no that hasnt blocked that port either.

Assume your FTP server is on port21? If not then the port its on will need opening in the firewall to, otherwise it should just work fine.

I dont recommend using the XP firewall though. Its the 1st thing I turned off. I rely on my router's hardware firewall. Much more effective than sware firewalls.

I was going to post a big thread, but somone else wrote what I was going to post already:

Read this:

http://www.ncftpd.com/ncftpd/doc/mis...firewalls.html

note the difference between passive & active clients & servers - this is where your problem lies i think.

basicly eithor the client OR the server has to have a "range" (depening on the server) of ports - other than 25 open - or they will fail to connect.

Ah yes pasv ports need to be opened n in your FTP server to. I do this in G6/bulletproof server, and in the router the same range of ports are opened.

The problem lies with M$'s ftp server - it requires a MASSIVE range of open ports.

Most third party ones can be configured to listen on whatever you like.
