Formatted machine a few weeks back so now just ironing our a few niggles....

Windows Media Player will not display videos (Mpegs). It just plays sound with the standard "trippy" graphics.

How can I get it to display videos again?

Or is there a free download of some better software somewhere?

vlc media player should the trick, get it here

or if you want make media player a lot better download this:

if you download that untick media player classic from the install options
