recommend me a daily server backup solution, around 6GB
I'd appreciate anyone's advice on the most suitable backup solution on the market for our daily server backups.
The device needs to utilise removeable media to take off site.
Our backups are circa 6Gb and growing.
I know a lot of people use DAT, but I was wondering if its getting a little long in the tooth, and if there was a superior alternative nowadays ?

Go for some sort of LTO Backup system. (ADIC/HP and most other vendors should do them)
USB Drives might be fine for some but if you have to store data offsite they aren't practical nor do they meet some regulatory requirements.

LTO is a bit OTT for 6GB of data IMHO. HP Ultrium drives start at 100/200GB (native / compressed). The current Top Value internal drive with 5 data and 1 cleaning tapes will be around £800 or £900 ex VAT.
I'd agree DAT/DDS is long in the tooth, even with the HP DAT72 standard. Performance isn't great and the drives are somewhat fragile.
Sony do an AIT-E which is 20/50GB in SCSI and IDE versions. AIT-1 Turbo is 40/100GB native and has a snazzy USB/Fireware external version. The IDE internal version should be around £440 inc VAT. I'd certainly consider AIT as reliable as DLT or LTO (I have both AIT and LTO drives in servers I look after).

As a wild card you might look at Iomega's Rev. 35/90GB on a cartridge. Amazon do the USB external for £215.

thats great lads - I'll check out all those new acronyms out
TonyFlow, I might get some external USB h/disks in for a separate backup system I want to implement - baremetal recovery using Symantec Livestate.
Right, off to Sony, HP and Iomega sites to check up on those devices mentioned.
Thanks again, all!

Software - BackupExec is also my recommendation
Hardware - Travan 20GB drives and tapes are quite cheap now, DLT drives are more stable just you will pay for that. Travan drives are stable just not as stable as DLT drives
