pioneer dvd-109 will burn dvd's and cd's and plus and minus
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=172712
can get it on the above link
with dvd, a DVD-R is write once read many whereas a DVD-RW can be written to several times.
As far as im aware the plus format you can do more with, but the minus format is better supported. Films use the minus format

have a read of that

LG make a nice tri format drive. It will burn all forms of DVDs, and will also handle all CDs. I have the older version that works a treat, its just a lot slower than the new one.

Humm NEC ? , I'd go with the 109 bud , iv got both & the 109 knocks spots of the NEC ,
IMO that is , agree that plextor are 1 of the best out there but it all depends on how much you are going to use it , I had a plex cd-rw & it lasted over 4 years , then i got a cheap 1 BIG mistake back-up about 30-40 disk for the car & kaput it died on me ,
Pioneer have been doing writers for a long time so you wont go wrong with a 109 buddy ( most come with the updated firm-ware so plug in & go )

NEC's are good, mines chugging along nicely - does everything except DVD-RAM, can also be tweeked to force it to burn at higher speeds on cheapo discs (which sometimes limit you to 4x ).
As to which format is best to write with, well thats a good question. I have a really old Yelo DVD player in the lounge and it isn't bothered at what type of disc you put in (rw+ RW- R- R+ they all work ) in theory it should only play R- discs, but its not bothered what I stick in it
