it should be fairly easy, they are usually on a tray mechanism and just slide out. You may need to loosen or take out a small screw first.
You might be able to simply swap them over, assuming of course you are opting for the same master/slave arrangement. There are small tabs on the back to enable this, just take you time, don't ruch anything and read the instructions
If you have XP all the better, as you may not need the CD that will more than likely be in the box. (never unwrapped mine!)

im gonna atempt it for a friend, he bought a cdrom of ebay, it does have a tab thing sticking outy the back.
there are loads of small screws over the bottom of the laptop, noe really near where the cdrom sits though.
It looks to me like it would jus prize out of its hole, but dont wanna break it....??!!?
Laptop is a toshiba, (if that helps)

laptop hmmm, that's different then.
Unless there are two CD devices, you won't need to worry about master/slave tabs.
The CD units on laptops tend to be modular, you can simply swap them around no problemo - as long as they are the same brand I think. Mine just disconnects and slides out, I can then use the bay for 3.5 disk or whatever.
Is it modular, or does it look more permenant?

just to add...
I wouldn't advise taking the screws out of the laptop without drawing a diagram of them first, locations etc. They are sure to bee different and you will find that some will diconnect the keyboard so you can access from the top.
Sounding stupid, but are you should there are no switches to slide the bay out. If it's IBM it's a small padlock button, Dell have a small triangular switch etc
