Cannot get to windows Update

Cannot get to windows Update
Everytime I try to get to windows update the page freezes - even accessing the link to get the web address - the properties dialogue has frozen!!!
I found the latest error in the windowsupdate.log 0x80072ee7 and from there to the line to be romved in the 'hosts' file - but still no joy!
I have dual boot on my main machine both XP pro and both suffer from this???
Computer also does not shut down fully, it hangs at the last 'windows is shutting down' comment and needs to be turned off manually.
Also my other machine - networked by netgear wireless connection also will not access the windows update page - This machine will not boot up into Win XP Pro or Win ME (Dual boot) without re-booting. Even if reboot very early straight after BIOS beep it will go all the way through fine on either OS! ???
I thought windows update hang might be something to do with the router and have upgraded the firmware...
Still no go! HELP
